It is not unheard of for kids to sneak out of the house. It is also not unheard of for kids to take their parents car and go joyriding. But, what unusual about this story is that the kid in question is only 8-years old.
An 8-year old Ohio boy waited until after his parents fell asleep, when he drove his 4-year old sister to the drive-thru at McDonalds, not hitting anything on the way. He safely seated his little sister in the backseat of his fathers van and took a trip that went over railroad tracks, through four intersections, and incorporated several turns.
Overall, the boy was a very safe driver. He stuck to the speed limit and stopped at all red lights. He used Youtube videos to figure out how to learn to drive.
When he got to the McDonalds, he bought him and his sister some cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets with money from his piggy bank, surprising the drive through employees who thought that the incident was a prank. He was found by police and made it safely home.
Eight p.m. Sunday in East Palestine, Ohio. Dad is in bed after working all day. Mom, also exhausted, falls asleep on the couch.
Even though they’ve had dinner earlier, the 8-year-old son and his 4-year-old sister are hungry — for McDonald’s. But instead of the waking up his parents, the boy decides this is a problem he can handle by himself.
After reaching the drive-thru at the fast-food restaurant, the boy paid for the cheeseburgers with money from his piggy bank. The McDonald’s workers thought the kid’s parents were pranking them.
“The workers thought that the parents were in the back, but obviously they weren’t,” Koehler told the Weirton Daily Times. Police arrived, but not before the children got to eat a cheeseburger and chicken nuggets.
Meanwhile, the kids were spotted by a family friend who notified their grandparents, who drove to the restaurant to take them home.
