North Korea has sent out a message to foreign journalists to prepare for a “big and important” event on Thursday. This ominous message does not include what the event will be or where it will take place.
The nation’s biggest holiday is approaching and it is called “Day of the Sun,” which celebrates the birth of Kim Il Sung, the founder of North Korea and grandfather of Kim Jong-un.
Similar declarations have been made by the North Koreans in the past, but nothing ever came of it. There is a possibility this year, though, that North Korea will use the holiday as an opportunity to showcase its arsenal and nuclear program.
From The Hill:
North Korean officials have previously made similar declarations to the foreign press that have ended up being largely unsubstantiated, according to the report. Some speculate, however, that North Korea will seek to showcase its military arsenal in light of the ongoing standoff with the U.S. over its nuclear program.
North Korean state media issued a warning to the U.S. Tuesday, stating that the country will utilize its nuclear capabilities at any sign of U.S. aggression. The warning followed President Trump’s decision to send a U.S. Navy strike group, including an aircraft carrier, towards the Korean peninsula.
