United States President Donald Trump ordered joint drills with a U.S. carrier strike group that is headed for Korean waters. This is in response to all the ballistic missile tests that has been going on lately in Korea.
This is putting China on edge, as they have made a request for all sides to try and restrain themselves on Monday.
The exercises will occur in the waters off the coast of the Koreans peninsula. Their goal is to warn North Korea, which has been getting a little too bold lately. Hopefully this will discourage the trigger happy dictatorship from further action.
North Korea may conduct more nuclear tests soon, disregarding the previous warnings from the United Nations.
North Korea is upset by the approaching United States carrier group and has gone so far as to threaten the United States, saying that the U.S. should “consider carefully any catastrophic consequence from its foolish military.”
In addition to the U.S. aircraft carrier, there will be two Japanese destroyers in the area for these drills.
China is increasingly worried the situation could spin out of control, leading to war and a chaotic collapse of its isolated and poverty-struck neighbor. Xi told Trump that China resolutely opposes any actions that run counter to U.N. Security Council resolutions, a Chinese foreign ministry statement said. China “hopes that all relevant sides exercise restraint, and avoid doing anything to worsen the tense situation on the peninsula”, the statement paraphrased Xi as saying. The nuclear issue can only be resolved quickly with all relevant countries pulling in the same direction, and China is willing to work with all parties, including the United States, to ensure peace, Xi said. The issue has gained added urgency as North Korea prepares to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its Korean People’s Army on Tuesday. It has marked similar events in the past with nuclear tests or missile launches.
