India Ali met what she thought was the man of her dreams on Instagram. According to her, based on his Instagram pictures, “he looked like he had it going on.” Unfortunately, that was not the case. She was assaulted by him during a date and hopes that her terrible experience will serve as a warning to others.
It took a while for her to finally be comfortable enough to set up a date with him and the pair decided to go out for a night on the town. Her dates name was James Baker and he painted the perfect picture of charm and perfection.
They posted on Instagram about the two drink and laughing on their date. It all seemed almost too good to be true.
She does not remember anything about the date after the drinks, although there are photos of instagram capturing the ride back to LAX.
Somehow the two ended up in a hotel room that night, and when Ali woke up, she immediately knew something was wrong. There was blood and vomit everywhere. When she looked into the mirror, she could see how badly she was beaten up. Her phone and care keys were gone, so she used the hotel phone to call 911.
She was taken to a hospital where she was treated. She was beaten so severely, she suffered from brain swelling – which is what caused her to vomit.
Police used Ali’s Track My iPhone app and located Baker, who was just a few miles away, with the phone and Ali’s car at the Marriott hotel in El Segundo. Surveillance video from the Westin also showed Baker leaving the hotel in Ali’s car at about 2 a.m. Investigators later found Baker had prior out of state convictions and was on bail for allegedly using fake credit cards. Ali is hoping her story will remind others to be cautious about who they meet online. “I wouldn’t want anybody to go and meet up with anybody that they don’t know. Please don’t ever do that … You have to value your life,” Ali said. Baker, who has been found guilty of assaulting Ali, had his sentencing postponed earlier this month.
