In Britain, the police force is trying to attract more transgender officers by switching a core part of the police officer uniform.
According to a press release by Northamptonshire Police, the police helmets, which traditionally look like United States baseball hats, are now going to look like ‘gender neutral’ baseball caps.
Authorities are going with the story and baseball caps “offer a better level of protection” when it is compared to a helmet.
This is specifically meant to be a move that will open doors for the “non-binary transgender community,” which is code for not fitting into one of the two genders, male and female. They used to issue two types of helmets, one for men and one for women.
This was apparently insensitive to the ‘third gender,’ as the would only get to pick between those two options, so the whole force is getting a downgrade in equipment to avoid any hurt feelings.
Every police officer has been issued a baseball hat and the old helmets will be all disposed of by the end of next month.
From Heat Street:
The police also said the new hats are lighter and more comfortable, as well as “significantly cheaper.”
“Research showed the most popular headgear among male officers was the flat cap, but it offers no protection, while the traditional custodian helmet is impractical for most duties and is only fully protective when the chin strap is used,” the police force statement added.
Chief Constable Simon Edens noted: “This is a very significant change for the Force and I welcome it wholeheartedly. Our officers and PCSOs are well equipped for 21st Century policing but now the introduction of this new headgear will better protect them as they protect people from harm.”
