A 3 week old baby, Susannah Jean Murray, died after being bitten on the head by the family pet. This story serves as a cautionary tale to be wary of animals when introducing a new child into the home.
An autopsy confirmed that she died from a dog bite. Susannah was left alone with the family pet and no one expected that this action could possibly lead to the poor girl’s life ending.
She was rushed to the emergency room, but no surgery could save her. She died at approximately 2 a.m. after undergoing seven hours of surgery.
All it took was five minutes alone with the three family pit bulls for the most awful thing to happen.
Her caretaker stepped out for what felt like only a moment, but when she returned, she found Susannah bleeding from a severe head injury and one of the dogs had blood around his mouth.
The dog who most likely attacked the little girl has been quarantined, along with the other two dogs from the home. They are at a local animal shelter.
Neighbors told the paper that they were wary of the animals and had seen them act aggressively in the past. “Just the breed of a pit bull by itself is not enough to condemn it, any dog can bite something, they have teeth,” said Dixon. “I would say that this serves as a definite reminder not to leave children alone with dogs in the house.” The GRPD and Child Protective Services are investigating. Dixon says they will give their investigation to the Kent County Prosecutor to review and consider any possible criminal charges.
