The annual White House Press Correspondents was missing its most important guest last evening.
Instead of sitting down to listen to jokes and self-congratulatory stories from the press corps, the President was attending a rally with his supporters in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The Week reported that the host of this year’s event was The Daily Show’s Hasan Minhaj, a person that most people have never heard of.
Jeff Mason, president of the White House Correspondents Association, encouraged the press to take an even-handed approach to the evening.
I was not looking for someone to roast the president in absentia. It’s a very different dinner without the president there. We will be focused on the First Amendment and journalism and the importance of a free press . . . That doesn’t mean there can’t be some jokes about the president, but just that there should be some jokes on the press.
While the formal dinner was underway, TBS’s Samantha Bee hosted her own “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.”
