Eating boogers out of your nose is one of those really gross things that most people do when they think they can get away with it.
Now, scientists at several top universities recommend that parents no longer discourage children from picking their noses as snot contains ‘a rich reservoir of good bacteria.’
It may be hard advice for many parents to swallow, as it’s long been considered good parenting to encourage kids not to eat what’s in their nose.
The article that appeared in the Science section of The Telegraph gave glowing reviews to eating boogers.
Dr. Scott Napper, professor of biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan has this explanation.
So maybe when you have an urge to pick your nose and eat it, you should just go with nature. From an evolutionary perspective, we evolved under very dirty conditions, and maybe this desire to keep our environment and our behaviors sterile isn’t actually working to our advantage.
Austrian Professor Friedrich Bischinger added:
Eating the dry remains of what you pull out is a great way of strengthening the body’s immune system. Medically it makes great sense and is a perfectly natural thing to do. In terms of the immune system, the nose is a filter in which a great deal of bacteria are collected.
