Europe has grown used to Barack Obama giving in to whatever they wanted for the past eight years.
So, it was a shock to them this week as America’s new President, Donald Trump, actually put American interests first.
None was more upset than German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had become best friends Barack Obama over the past eight years. ZeroHedge reported that Merkel was “furious.”
But, Obama’s long gone and Trump is not as willing to bow to Europe’s wishes.
At the G-7 meeting held this weekend, Trump broke tradition by not agreeing to the Group of Seven line on trade or climate change. Indeed, the U.S. refused to agree to the final affirmation of the meeting stating that the U.S. is still “reviewing” the process.
The whole discussion about climate has been difficult, or rather very unsatisfactory” German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters Saturday. “Here we have the situation that six members, or even seven if you want to add the EU, stand against one. That means there are no signals until now whether the U.S. will remain in the Paris Agreement or not. We have therefore not talked around it but made clear that we the six member states and the EU remain committed to the goals of the agreement.
Just as Trump made clear in earlier discussions about NATO, he is no longer willing to let the interests of the United States be secondary to those of arrogant Europeans, particularly Mrs. Merkel.
