North Korea have been testing their weapons to show themselves as a credible threat. Thankfully, it has not happened – YET! But it doesn’t stop them from trying! Let’s hope they don’t actually have missiles which are capable of reaching US soil.
However, attacks on the US grids may be more in their league, and the US Congress are slightly nervous.
Back in 2001, the Congress established a commission to look into the danger of an electromagnetic pulse generated by a nuclear weapon. Their reports showed that while there would be no damage on the ground (thankfully), critical infrastructure could be destroyed.
What is even more concerning are the reports that Russia transferred designs for a super-EMP nuclear weapon to North Korea over ten years ago. We have read about them in books, but they seem to be possible to build in real life. The Congress believe so and so do North Korea, who have been working on such weapons over the past decade.
Personally, we hope it remains the subject of sci-fi!
The Federalist Papers Project reports:
The dictator of North Korea certainly likes to dream big.
So far, they’ve only been able to think small with their weapons capability, but that doesn’t stop them from trying.
