A Muslim woman appearing in an Australian court after she, her husband, a convicted ISIS recruiter, and their two children sued the Commonwealth for assault. Moutia Elzahed and Hamdi Alqudsi claimed they were assaulted during a counter-terrorism raid in 2014.
When Judge Audrey Balla asked why Elzahed didn’t stand when ordered to do so, her lawyer explained that as a strict Muslim, she won’t stand for anyone but Allah.
The judge also explained that she would have to remove her niqab to give testimony as well.
Judge Balla instructed the Elzahed that she would consider each refusal to stand as a separate count of disrespecting the court.
Each count of disrespecting the court carries a maximum 14-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine.
We don’t expect to see Elzahed walking around free any time soon!
