It was a sad day for the family of 19-year-old Preston Johnston when he drowned in a local river in Chimney Rock, North Carolina. Preston had been enjoying a fun afternoon with family friends when the trouble struck.
Ten-year-old twins Brian and Ryan Oaks were swimming out to an island in the Rocky Broad River when they began struggling against the pull of the current. Without hesitating, the youth jumped in to save them. He took them to a rock to make sure they were out of harm’s way of the current. After rescuing the two children, Johnston was too tired to get himself to safety, and he drowned.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said, “A dive team from the Henderson County Rescue Squad was able to recover Johnston’s body around 8:00 PM.”
It took approximately two hours before the Henderson County Rescue Squad managed to find the body due to the current and the clarity of the muddy water.
19-year-old Preston Johnston of Spindale died a hero.
Conservative Tribune reports:
A 19-year-old North Carolina teen who died in 2016 after he saved two younger boys who were having trouble swimming in a local river is the epitome of heroism, and we’d do well to remember his sacrifice as summer nears.
According to WLOS-TV, Preston Johnston drowned in July in Chimney Rock, North Carolina, after he was too tired from saving the boys to continue swimming. His body was found wedged under the same rock he used to put the two boys out of harm’s way.
