According to reports from a Syrian human rights organization, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead. Al-Baghdadi was the leader of the Islamic State and was the most wanted man in the world.
Is it a victory over ISIS and ISIL?
Nicknamed “The Ghost,” al-Baghdadi had been in hiding since 2014. During his time as the IS leader, there were many rumors that he had been injured or killed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that earlier reports from the Iraqi media about the death of al-Baghdadi were true.
According to reports, the radical Islamic group will announce a “new caliph” to replace him soon.
“We cannot confirm this report, but hope it is true,” a coalition spokesman told the press. “We strongly advise ISIS to implement a strong line of succession, it will be needed.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry claimed last month they suspected that al-Baghdadi had been killed in a Russian aistrike in May.
Although accurate details of his death haven’t been released, most sources agree that he is, indeed, dead.
