Russian – American lobbyist, Rinat Akhmetshin claimed that he attended Don Jr.’s meeting last year with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya in Trump Tower.
Although Akhmetshin told the AP he served in the Soviet military in a unit that was part of counterintelligence, he was never formally trained as a spy.
According to Akhmetshin, the information provided at the meeting was documents suggesting “the flow of illicit funds to the Democrats.”
Akhmetshin told reporters that after Veselnitskaya revealed that the Trump campaign would need to conduct further research to determine whether the information was verifiable, Don Jr. became visibly uninterested.
Akhmetshin said he has no idea if Veselnitskaya’s documents were provided by the Russian government. He said he thinks she left the materials behind with Trump associates who were also at the meeting.
Akhmetshin doesn’t know if Veselnitskaya handed the documents to anyone in particular, or simply just left them behind.
Akhmetshin told the AP he “never thought this would be such a big deal” and that the meeting was “not substantive.”
While Akhmetshin has been described by American news outlets as a former member of the Soviet military, a spokesman for the Kremlin told the AP on Friday that they never heard of him.
