Tammy Lemieuxes and her husband had just gone to bed when they heard what sounded like firecrackers going off outside their house. When they went to investigate, they found Auburn police officer Ronald Tarentino, dying in their yard.
Officer Tarentino had been shot by Jorge Zambrano, who vanished into the darkness, leaving the brave 45-year-old father-of-three to die alone.
Before they were even out the front door, their hearts sank at the sound of Officer Tarentimo using his last breath to call out for help. “Help!” and “Officer down!” the Lemieuxes heard as they opened the door. When they saw his bloody body on the ground, they did not hesitate. They quickly grabbed towels and ran to the mortally wounded officer. But what Tammy did next would leave officers arriving on the scene speechless.
Tammy held Tarentino’s hand as her husband supported his head in his hands. She whispered reassuring words of kindness and peace to this complete stranger.
“I held his hand and I told him everything would be okay and my husband held his head up with a towel. He said, ‘help me, help me.’ I said, ‘help is on the way.’”
Unfortunately, Tarentino died from his wounds.
“I hope he rests in peace knowing he wasn’t alone, that me and my husband were with him, and I want him to be at peace and his family to be at peace knowing he wasn’t alone,” Tammy said.
And as for the thug Jorge Zambrano? He was killed later in a shoot out with police.
