Doesn’t Ivanka Trump have a fashion business? I’m certain she would be more than happy to help her stepmother out.
According to this, fashion designer Sophie Theallet – whose work has been worn by Michelle Obama – decided to throw a very public tantrum today by issuing a statement saying that she would never, ever, ever, EVER allow her clothing to be worn by Melania Trump once President-Elect Donald Trump takes office –
“As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady,” Sophie Theallet wrote in a letter this week.
“The rhetoric of racism, sexism, and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by,” Theallet wrote about President-elect Donald Trump.
“I encourage my fellow designers to do the same,” she continued.
“I am well aware it is not wise to get involved in politics,” the fashion maven wrote. “That said, as a family-owned company, our bottom line is not just about money. We value our artistic freedom and always humbly seek to contribute to a more humane, conscious and ethical way to create in this world.”
I admit, I know jack-all about the world of fashion (I leave that realm to my fellow Chicks), but this just seems petty and low. Is this typical of the fashion industry, to always be stuck in catty Mean-Girl-mode? I mean, did this woman EVER leave high school?
Is it because Melania’s a legal immigrant, Sophie? Aren’t you being xenophobic towards her?
It’s ridiculous that Sophie Theallet thinks that by her refusing to have anything to do with the Trump Administration that Donald Trump is just going to go away. All Sophie’s done is opened up an opportunity for a designer who doesn’t let politics inform their business decisions. I’m sure there are plenty of other designers who would jump at the chance to have their products worn by the First Lady, regardless of political opinion.
It’s Sophie’s loss.
